Age is Just a Number - Music is Timeless!

We love featuring our students. Today, we’d like to feature one of our adult students. Introducing a short article written by our very own Deborah Fox!

When an activity recently ended, Deborah wondered what to do next. And then it hit her: music! She was fortunate to have  studied piano lessons since she was 7 and now was the time to continue. “I grew up in a musical household from big band music to the Beatles so this seemed like a natural continuation.” She has the gene: Mom sang and danced in the USO during World War II and her grandmother played piano for the silent movies at a big theater in her hometown.

She immediately sought out Venita for voice lessons but when Venita found out about her piano background, that seemed like a natural pairing. “It has been so much fun and so much work! But all those piano lessons and training has come back.” They started with classics ---- Mozart and Bach from her younger years using some of the same music. Not enough of a challenge. “We are doing some contemporary pieces. David Lanz, Jim Brickman, Michael Dulin, Jon Schmidt.” And vocals? Venita suggested an app Called KaraFun. “I get to sing along with Annie Lennox and can back away her lead vocal so it is mostly me carrying the lead. We never had that technology when I was growing up.” No, she says, she is not singing karaoke at a local watering hole.

The hardest thing now is still making time to regularly practice since she also is singing with the Pagosa Community Choir for Christmas. “Mom and sister still laugh at my excuse for not doing the dishes. Whenever it was time to do the dishes, I’d announce that I had to practice piano. Mom couldnt argue with me!” It has paid off.
