What Really Happens in a Great Music Lesson?

You may think you know what happens in a typical music lesson - play a song, fix mistakes, go home, repeat - but there is actually quite a bit of very intentional teaching that we work hard to incorporate into Rocky Mountain Music. So what does really go in during a lesson at our studio?

  • Connection

We love our students and it is important to have a connection with each one of them. We like to ask how their day or week has been, what was hard to practice on, what was easy. This helps motivate both our students and ourselves to work through any problems with their pieces.

  • Warm-ups with a purpose

Scales, technique exercises, and rhythm are NOT just busy work. These pre-practice rituals are vital to your growth as a musician, whether it be a singer, a pianist, a horn player, or a drummer! Working on these will build your confidence and make things easier down the road as your skills increase.

  • Learning how to practice - not just what to play

Part of an effective lessons is the studio instructor catching a problem and taking the time with the student to break it down and work on it. We may not get through a whole piece in a lesson, but if we are able to fix a problem area, we’ve had a successful lesson!

  • Repertoire that fits the student

We put quite a bit of thought and effort into researching and choosing repertoire that fits the student’s abilities and personality, while still choosing some that also aid in technique learning. We want our students to love their music!

Consistent, thoughtful lessons will build skills that reach beyond music. Music lessons teach focus, perseverance, creativity, and confidence. We love being a part of this growth within our students.
